So we tell ourselves we’ll be happier in future. You know, once you’ve got on top of things, are where you want to be at work, have bought your own home, and definitely when you lose weight.

Put another way, you’ll be happy when you’re where you want to be—when you’re successful. 

But let me ask you a thought-provoking question:

Does happiness come before success? Or, success before happiness?

Look at most people, and you’ll see they’ve decided success comes first. They’ve either consciously or unconsciously got a belief that success comes first. In other words, they’ve told themselves once they become successful, then they’ll be happy. 

If this were true, anyone who has ever accomplished anything in life they wanted—a dream or goal—should be happy. And we all know this isn’t true!

Sadly, what actually happens when we achieve a goal is our definition of success changes. Meaning we set new, bigger goals. As a result, our happiness doesn’t increase. And maybe worst of all, we can’t work out why. 

We all do this by the way—often without realising it. It’s human nature and also what Society has taught us. The good news is this way of thinking is simply an unhelpful belief about happiness—one we can quite easily change. 

How to Increase Your Happiness Right Now

As I mentioned, most of us have the mindset and belief success comes before happiness. However, research has proven the relationship between success and happiness works the other way around. Which gives us a huge incentive to change our mindset and beliefs! 

So, now you know happiness fuels performance and success—rather than happiness being the reward for success, let’s look at how you can increase your happiness today. 

3 Simple Things You Can Do To Increase Your Happiness Right Now

1. Have something to look forward to. 

Whether that’s watching your favourite film tonight, an activity you enjoy this weekend, or a holiday with friends at some point this year. 

Bonus Idea: Since the anticipation of something can light up pleasure centres in your brain as much as the activity itself, make sure you put your activity on your calendar to remind yourself of it often. 

2. Make your environment more positive. 

For example, think about where you work. What feelings does your space create? If you love flowers, candles, photos of loved ones, artwork or quotes, surrounding yourself with these things will give you a boost of positive emotions each time you look at them, and brighten your day.

Bonus Idea: It’s also worth looking for anything negative in your environment you can remove. For example, those news alerts on your phone or the clutter you keep meaning to tidy up! 

3. Do something kind for someone. 

Send a “thinking about you, thank you or job well done” message to someone you know. Buy coffee or flowers for a friend. Or donate a few pounds to charity. 

Bonus Idea: Research has shown spending money on others boosts our happiness more than spending on ourselves—meaning we can make others happy at the same time as ourselves. What a win-win situation!
