I’ve not forgotten my goal to save the most money possible this year…

It’s just, you know, hard to stick to.

Especially when it feels like a Starbucks kinda day ☕ — plus, it’s only £5.85…

Still, the shame and guilt is real when you don’t stick to your goals, right?

If shame and guilt bubble up for you every time you think you should save money, you’re not alone.

According to money.co.uk, a lot of people struggle to save.

In my opinion, it’s not our fault.

Most of us think we have a spending problem. Or even an income problem. But, when we dig deeper, it seems we have a motivation problem.

I know you promised yourself you’d save more money this year.

And I know you haven’t. But fret not, because today I’m sharing with you how to save the most money you can without a budget—yep, we’re keeping it nice and simple!

So, keep reading to learn:

  • The secret to saving money without a budget.
  • 5 simple steps to start saving money this year.
  • 3 questions to boost your motivation to save more.
  • The savings account you can open in the time it takes to sip your Starbucks.
  • The BEST way to start saving without it feeling restrictive.

But first, let’s go back in time because I’ve got a question for you. When you decided to save more money, did you pause to ask yourself exactly what you were saving for and why?

I’m guessing not—most of us don’t—so no judgment here. But what I want you to know is answering that question is the secret you’ve been looking for to help you save more money.

Clarifying what you want and why is how you become successful.

For example, I’m sure you’ll agree that saying, “I want to save for a holiday” isn’t as powerful and motivating as:

“I’m saving £3,000 for my DREAM holiday to New York because I’ve always wanted to go there—to see a Broadway show, stand in Times Square and visit a coffee shop to pretend I’m in Friends! It’ll feel amazing, and I’ll be so proud of myself when I land in JFK and start exploring everything NYC has to offer.”

That’s 👆 what we all need to do. To clarify what we’re saving for, why and how we’ll feel when we reach our goal. When we don’t picture what our future will look like once we’ve got more money—it’s hard to find the motivation to save.

So, today I’m sharing five steps to help you clarify exactly what you want and why.

Plus, how to start saving money in a way that practically guarantees you’ll reach your goals.

How to Save Money Without a Budget

Try these five simple steps to save the most money possible this year:

Step 1:

Write down your answers to this question: What do you want to have, do or be? In other words, what do you want to do with your money?

Step 2:

Choose one goal from your list. Then ask why it’s important to you—why do you want it? Jot down as many whys as possible.

Step 3:

Imagine how you’ll feel. Feelings are one of the most motivating forces available to us. So, how do you want to feel when you reach your goal? Write down all the feels

Step 4:

Decide how much you can comfortably save each month towards your goal. For now, the aim is to start building a savings habit. So start small. Choose a monthly amount you’ll hardly notice. (Once you’re regularly saving, say, £20 a month, then look to start saving more if you want to reach your goal sooner.)

Step 5:

Open a savings account right now. I recommend Atom Bank’s Instant Saver—open it on your phone in minutes! Then set up a regular monthly payment (the day after payday) from your current account to your savings account for the amount you chose in Step 4.

Deciding what you want and why, then getting started with a small step, is the secret to success.
