2 Questions That’ll Motivate You in One Minute or Less
#1 — On a scale of 1 to 10, how motivated are you to X?
#2 — Why isn’t your motivation lower?
Let’s take exercise as an example.
Right now, ask yourself how motivated you are to exercise on a scale of 1 to 10.
1 = Not at all
10 = Very
If you say 4, ask yourself why you’re not a 3. You might say:
- You know you’ll have more energy after it
- It’ll get you out of your head and clear your mind
- You’ll feel better for doing it
- It’ll make you feel lighter and more in control
Take a look at your answers. See what you’ve done?
You’ve given yourself a list of motivating reasons to exercise.
How cool is that?! Think about it for a second.
What do you usually do when you’re unmotivated? Be hard on yourself? Get at yourself for not doing it? Compare yourself to “that girl’?
Does it work? Does it motivate you?
I know it doesn’t. It doesn’t motivate me either.
Paradoxically, what makes you MORE motivated is asking (without self-judgement or criticism) why you’re not LESS motivated.
Asking yourself powerful questions like these is a form of self-coaching — and when done with kindness and curiosity, it’s a highly effective way to help yourself be happier, healthier and more successful.
After all, the most important words are those you say to yourself. So, practice asking yourself positive questions like these — and watch your confidence, mood and energy levels lift.

If you’re anything like me, you love reading self-help articles like this. But what I now know is that change only happens when you take action.
So, before you go, ask yourself what you’re not motivated to do right now.
What’s one thing you say you’ll do but don’t?
Go to boxercise, HIIT or circuits?
Swap your Twix for a healthy snack?
Start a hard task rather than make coffee?
Make supper instead of getting a takeaway?
What’s the first thing that popped into your head? Choose that!
Whatever it is, I challenge you to use these 2 questions for a week to motivate yourself to do it. Create a reminder on your phone or sticky note so you don’t forget — because it might just change your life.
With love,
Becky x
