How Do I Achieve My Goal Without The Overwhelm?
This is the simplest way to stop feeling overwhelmed:
Break your goals down into 5-minute actions and do ONE a day.
How? By following this simple 6-step routine:
Step 1
Write down your #1 goal.
Step 2
Jot down everything you could do to achieve your goal. Make each action as small as possible — ideally, ones that’ll take you between 5 and 30 minutes.
Step 3
Read your list and cross through anything you don’t actually need to do.
Step 4
Look at the actions you’ve got left and put them in order of priority. Which is most important, second and third? You’ve now got 3 clear nect action steps for your goal.
Step 5
Do your most important action right now. Complete your second tomorrow. And your third the next day.
Step 6
On day 4, choose your next 3 actions and complete them over the next 3 days. Then, repeat the process again and again until you reach your goal.
3 Step-By-Step Examples
If your goal’s to eat better, you might try these actions:
- Find healthy breakfast ideas (tonight).
- Decide what to have for breakfast during the week (tomorrow).
- Start eating a healthier breakfast (repeat daily).
If your goal’s to exercise more consistently, you might do this:
- Find an exercise class you want to try (tonight).
- Ask a friend to join you (tomorrow).
- Book class for the next 6 weeks (day after tomorrow).
If your goal’s to reduce negative thoughts, you might try these steps:
- Read a self-help article on gratitude journaling (tonight).
- Put a notebook and pen next to your bed (tomorrow).
- Write one thing you’re grateful for before going to sleep (repeat each night).
Most people aren’t working towards their goals this way, because they think such small steps won’t make a difference. But trust me, over time, it’ll make more difference than you think possible.
Why It’s Important To Break Your Goals Down
Small daily actions prevent feelings of overwhelm that lead to procrastination, feeling unmotivated, and never getting started.
They also create forward momentum because you’re doing something productive every day towards the person you want to be.
You’re making progress rather than wishing you were!
Plus, it’s what you do regularly — no matter how small — that gets you to your goal.
Which means you can actually achieve your goal in 5 minutes a day.
Yes, really.
Think about it…
If you do one 5-minute action towards your goal every weekday, that’s 260 actions a year.
Let’s say your goal’s to feel more confident talking to people. If you spend just 5 minutes each day working on your communication skills, that’s 24 hours a year — way better than 0 hours and still feeling insecure this time next year.
Or, let’s say your goal’s to read more. If you spend 5 minutes a day reading 5 pages, that’s 4 to 5 books by the end of the year — way better than no books!
Now it’s over to you! What goal do you want to achieve? And how can you break it down into small steps that you can start doing right now?
Bonus Tips
Some actions will be tasks you do once. Others will be actions you repeat often.
For example, if your goal’s to buy your dream home, you might have a one-off action to open a savings account. Plus, a recurring action to save £200 a month.
Also, remember, your action plan’s not set in stone. It’ll change as you make progress and learn what works and doesn’t.
In fact, rather than call it an action plan (feels restrictive), I say its a roadmap.
A roadmap that gets me unstuck, makes me feel in control and boosts my motivation. And who doesn’t want that.
