In my opinion, and from experience, it’s a toxic societal lie. One that gives everyone the impression healthy food and eating is boring, restrictive and time-consuming. 

The worst part? These lies make us feel deprived, frustrated, guilty, and eventually an unmotivated loser. Right?

Being Healthy Doesn’t Have to Be Hard

A healthy lifestyle is about balance — not restriction, deprivation or guilt. It’s having the choice to choose healthier alternatives when you can and want to.

Healthy eating is about thinking long-term. It’s asking yourself, what healthy junk food swaps are you happy to stick with most of the time?

And, rather than giving up the food you love, it’s about replacing it with tasty and satisfying healthier alternatives — like those below.

  3. Swap your morning biscuit and afternoon crisps for a banana with peanut butter (in my humble opinion, this is the best snack ever), oatcakes and cheese, or some nuts and an apple. 
  4. Swap sugar-laden fat-free yoghurt for full-fat Greek or natural yoghurt.
  5. Swap your favourite takeaway for supermarket-ready meals or pizzas — and at some point, try cooking your own (there’s an unbelievable number of quick, easy and healthy fakeaway recipes online).
  6. Swap white bread and pasta for wholemeal and wholewheat.
  7. Swap your burger and fries when out for a meal, for steak (filet, sirloin or flat iron), chips and veg.
  8. Swap cream-based pasta sauces for tomato-based sauces with added veggies.
  9. Swap your high-sugar evening treat for a piece of dark chocolate or some berries with yoghurt. 
  10. Swap that cake or muffin for a teacake, crumpet, croissant, doughnut or malt loaf.

In my opinion, these healthy junk food swaps are all quick, easy and simple. None of them feel restrictive or taste bland. And, as a bonus, all of them will give you more energy.
